NJ Firefighter, Police Officers Injured in Apartment Fire

Around 70 Newark firefighters worked for nearly two hours to get control of a two-alarm fire that sent a firefighter and four police officers to the hospital.

A New Jersey firefighter and four police officers were injured during a two-alarm apartment fire early Tuesday.

The fire broke out shortly after 1:50 a.m. on the third floor a Newark apartment building, WPIX-TV reports. Flames, however, quickly spread to the roof.

A Newark firefighter was injured battling the fire and taken to the hospital. No details were released about the nature or extent of the injuries.

Four police officers also were taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

Around 70 firefighters responded to the call, and the fire was under control just after 3:30 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
