Child Dead, Mom Unaccounted For in GA Apartment Fire

Nov. 24, 2022
An East Point neighbor managed to save a girl but couldn't get to her twin or mother.

A girl is dead and her mother is still unaccounted for following an apartment fire in East Point, GA.

Ricardo Tolbert, a neighbor, told Alive 11 reporters he raced toward the fire to help.

“I busted the window out, and I raised the window up. I yelled in there, and the baby raised her hand, and I snatched her out of there," he said.

His efforts to save the girl's twin sister and her mother were thwarted.

“I reached in, and I unlocked the door, and I went in to see if I could save anybody else. I couldn’t make it too far because of the smoke and the fire. I had to come out," he said. "I made three attempts.”

The girl he rescued was taken to a hospital for treatment for burns.

The cause remains under investigation.
