An embrace 45 years in the making took place Wednesday between a retired Boston firefighter and a man he rescued from a burning building.

"Oh my God! I wouldn't want to pick you up now, buddy. How're you doing? It's great to finally meet you," Joseph Gilmore said as he and Umar Fox hugged.

They haven's seen each other since Dec. 26, 1978, when Gilmore rescued Fox, then three, and Lisa, nine, WCVB reported.

he Fox family has been trying for years to track down Gilmore to thank him for rescuing Umar and Lisa.

"This guy saved our lives. We wouldn't be here. I have wonderful children. My sister has great kids. They're all grown up and doing big things right now."

The family said they have searched for Gilmore for years.
