The incident commander ordered firefighters to evacuate the building as conditions worsened.

Suffolk firefighters battled a massive fire in a commercial building late Monday night into Tuesday morning.

They encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from the Main Street building shortly after 10 p.m. Although an interior attack was initiated, it was short-lived as the incident commader ordered an evacuation, Fire Chief Mike Barakey told WAVY.

The Portsmouth Fire Department hazmat team, along with state officials, determined there were no hazardous materials in the building. The runoff was caused by fuel, batteries and tires that were burning.

Firefighters remained at the scene overnight.
