CHESAPEAKE — The Gilmerton Bridge was shut down in both directions following an apparent accident involving multiple tractor trailers on fire early Tuesday morning.

The Chesapeake Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched to the roadway, a bridge which crosses the Elizabeth River near where Military Highway meets Bainbridge Boulevard and Interstate 464, at around 3:50 a.m. Firefighters said they found two tractor trailers ablaze upon arrival, around five minutes later.

Minding the accident, officials recommend motorists commute using alternative routes.

Officials said the accident’s cause was currently unclear and under investigation. Firefighters said there were no reports of injuries. It was not immediately apparent how long the bridge would remain closed or the degree of damage to it, a fire department spokesperson said at around 7:30 a.m., though cleanup had begun.
