After Century of Service, Floral Park, NY, Fire Company Shuttered
A Long Island fire department sits shuttered after serving residents for the past century.
The shortage of volunteers at Floral Park Centre Fire Company forced the tough decision to cease operations as of 11:59 p.m. New Year's Eve, news 12 reported.
Officials notified residents that New Hyde Park Fire District and Nassau County Police Ambulance will now respond to emergencies.
“If you know what time the call is coming in at, you can organize people to be there. It’s getting harder and harder to get members around and to be here when there is a call.” Floral Park Fire Chief Martin Tolan said.
Other departments in Nassau County are willing to take firefighters interested in joining, he added.
