Lightning Sparks Explosion at Glenpool, OK, Tank Farm

GLENPOOL — A lightning strike is to blame for a fire of three tanks at the Explorer Pipeline tank farm.
According to reports, the blaze forced area highway closures and officials are recommending that people shelter in place and limit outdoor exposure. Glenpool Public Schools students, faculty and staff sheltered in place.
The Glenpool Police Department said emergency personnel were called reports of an explosion at the facility at 8:33 a.m.
"Two tanks have exploded, and fire crews remain on scene working to mitigate the fire and prevent further spread. No injuries have been reported at this time," GPD posted on its Facebook page. "As a precaution, all surrounding businesses and residences have been evacuated. The public is urged to avoid the area and allow emergency personnel to safely operate."
GPD closed 126th Street South between Casper Avenue and Elwood Avenue. U.S. Highway 75 remains open.
Explorer Pipeline issued a statement on its Facebook page: "Earlier this morning, lightning struck a tank at the Explorer Pipeline Glenpool tank farm resulting in a fire. The local fire department and emergency response teams have responded and secured the site."
