On Saturday, April 02, 2005 paramedics from New Hanover Regional EMS responded to an industrial accident at the North Carolina State Ports in Wilmington, North Carolina. The operator of a large crane used to unload ship containers sustained an injury due to an abrupt stop of the unit where his work station is located. The crane operator was in the control room of the unit, located 120 feet above ground level.
As part of the response plan for the State Ports, two EMS Ambulances, the EMS Special Operations Unit, and the EMS Supervisor were dispatched. Realizing the situation would be an extended operation and require additional resources, Wilmington Fire Department was requested. Two engine companies, two squads, a tower, and the WFD Battalion Chief responded.
