On April 8, 2004, engines 2, 1, and 4 and 402 (Battalion Chief) were dispatched to 602 Henderson Dr. in Jacksonville, NC at 12:29 PM.
First arriving units were on the scene at 12:35 PM, and found fire along with heavy smoke showing from the roof and attic areas of a single story ranch style house.
Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack but were unable to gain access to the attic. All units were withdrawn from the structure and a defensive operation brought the fire under control.
The house sustained major damage. All occupants escaped the home unharmed. The Red Cross was called to the scene to offer assistance to the occupants.
Witnesses reported that the fire started in the back of a contractors work vehicle parked at the rear of the house and spread to the back porch and attic. Contractors had been working on the house and left for lunch when the fire was discovered. The cause of the fire was determined to be careless smoking by workers igniting a fire in the back of the work truck.
