On Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at 4:22 am, the Wakulla County Volunteer Firefighters responded to a call at 7944 Coastal Highway in Newport, Florida.
On arrival they found a two story wood frame structure fully involved. This building was constructed out of old heart of pine wood, which burns very hot and fast.
This area has no hydrants so they had to use tankers from 3 different stations to supply enough water to fight the fire.
The responding stations were Saint Marks, Wakulla Station, Crawfordville, Apalachee Bay, Medart, and Sopchoppy, which was providing a forth tanker but was canceled due to having enough water from the other 3 tankers already on-scene.
The house was a total loss, and the owners unfortunately did not have insurance.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
