Willow Street Fire Company along with local EMS was dispatched to 450 Lancaster Pike in Providence Township for a MVA with reported entrapment.
The area of highway is know as "Polecat Hollow" and has been the scene of many serious vehicle accidents over the years.
The accident occurred at 4:22 pm, when a northbound 1994 Ford Taurus station wagon driven by a 30-year-old man lost control. He crossed over into the southbound lane and struck a 2002 Dodge Caravan driven by a 63-year-old woman head-on.
When Deputy Chief Mike Reese responded, he was advised by Lancaster County-Wide Communications that the accident was a head on collision with multiple patients and possibly multiple patients trapped and patients ejected.
Engine 5-12-2 arrived with Lt. Rhineer, and confirmed a head on collision with three patients trapped, one DOA on the roadway and two other ALS patients.
Medical helicopters were requested but they were unavailable due to weather.
Rescue 5-12 arrived with Chief Dave Reese and they began rescue operations with hydraulic tools to gain access to the three patients trapped. One patient was in a white Dodge Caravan and two patients were in a Ford Taurus station wagon.
Deputy Chief Reese initiated a mass causality response, which brought in Quarryville Rescue as a second rescue and numerous additional EMS units. Quarryville Rescue arrived and the crew did a search of the woods on both sides of the road due to the severity of the crash and the concern that there might be more patients. All patients were accounted for and the search came up negative.
All extrications were completed and all 6 patients were in the care of EMS at 4:52 pm. The six patients were transported to Lancaster General Hospital
