Gastonia Fire Department responded several times during the week beginning October 23, 2005 for both initial and extended attack in conjunction with Park officials, North Carolina Forest Service, and Crowders Mountain Fire and Rescue.
Firefighters had to contend with steep terrain, low humidities and wind trying to contain this fire which jumped the fire line three times.
NCFS provided ICS for this incident as well as the helicopters used for moving equipment and water. Once a water source (drop tank) was established on top of the mountain, a Mark III portable pump was used to supply a hose lay that mopped up the 10 acres that burned.
The drop tank was supplied with water by the helicopter using it's Bambi bucket. All shifts from station eight responded several times during the week for saw work and fire line construction.
Finally, on Sunday October 30, the NCFS, Crowders Mountain Fire and Rescue, Gastonia Fire Department Station 8 worked together to mop-up, extinguish hot spots, and improving fire lines to the point that all resources were finally released that evening at 6 pm. This fire was named "Lost My Sox" in honor of Joe Sox retiring Crowders Mountain State Park Superintendent.
