On wednesday, October 1, 2003 at approximately 5:30 p.m. San Antonio Firefighters were called to a reported structure fire at the intersection of Dawson St. and North Hackberry.
Engine company 3 reported heavy smoke showing in the area as the crew left their station. Minutes later Engine 3 arrived at an unoccupied wood-framed single family dwelling heavily involved.
Companies responding included Engines 3,5,7,1 Trucks 1 and 9. Firefighters initially had trouble attacking the fire from the 'C' side as an energized downed powerline obstructed access to the fire. It took approximately 35 minutes to bring the fire under control.
The location of the fire had been known to be haven for vagrants and was considered a nuisance. Demolition of the structure was ruled out because of the structure's 'historical significance,' as it was believed to have been built in the early 1900's.
There were no injuries reported with this fire. A damage estimate was not available. The Arson unit is investigating.
