On SEPT 16, 2003 a tank truck carrying 11,500 gallons of gasoline overturned as it tried to avoid another truck that cut him off. The driver was rescue by three teenagers who witnessed the accident and pulled him to safety before the product ignited.
The Detroit Fire Department fought the fire for 1 1/2 hours before calling for assistance from the Marathon Ashland Petroleum Refinery Fire Department located in Detroit.
The MAP Fire Department sent their Fire Chief, three industrial firefighters, a foam pumper, and a foam tanker to assist. Upon arrival the MAP fire equipment connected to the Detroit Fire Aerials and pumped them a AR/AFFF foam solution that the sprayed onto the fire which completely extinguished the fire in approximately 10 minutes.
Both departments remained on-scene until the truck was offloaded and carried away by the salvage company.
