On Monday September 8th 2003, the Oceanside fire department received calls for smoke coming from the town of Hempstead, NY, dump located off long beach road.
A large amount of garbage was on fire that communicated to the building. A working fire was ordered by the chief of Oceanside John Traverso.
Thick black smoke could be seen for miles and a large amount of mutual aid was used to the scene from surrounding towns. Traffic was in a knot due to long stretches across a main road leading from long beach.
All fire fighting operations lasted 3 hours.
