It was just another day in the city of Camden, New Jersey, June 13. But, a little before 7 p.m., the Fire Radio tones went off " Attention Squad 6. Rescue 1, Battalion 1, 810 York Street for a Rescue assignment."
As the companies were hitting the street, the fire radio came over with a update. the report was of a little girl with her head stuck in a iron railing on the front porch of a home at 810 York Street.
Squad 6 was first in with Captain John Merklein and firefighters Glen Scott, Lamont Steagall and Mike Mercado.
Capt Merklein reported he had a six-year-old girl with her head trapped in a railing and that Rescue One should prepare to go in service with their JAWS.
Rescue One was now arriving with Captain Frank Sandrock and firefighters Mike Labar, Cris Edwards, Jose Berrios, John Broadwater and Battalion Chief 1 Mo Wilson.
The six-year-old girl and her mother were quite frightened. Captain Merklein kept talking to them, telling them everything would be OK, as Rescue 1's members were setting up.
A cloth was place over the girl's head as Firefighter Labar began using the JAWS.
In a few seconds the Iron railing was cut and the little girl was free.
Members of Camden's EMS checked her over and she was not injured and but had a big smile on her face.
Rescue and Squad 6 picked up their tools and headed back to their stations for a late 7 p.m. dinner.
