Pittsburgh Firefighters Fight 5 Alarm Fire

A large fire broke out this morning in the city's Brighton Heights neighborhood on Woods Run, McClure St, and Richardson St.

A large fire broke out this morning in the city's Brighton Heights neighborhood on Woods Run, McClure St, and Richardson St.

After initial dispatch the fire grew to 5+ alarms within 20 minutes. Multiple Engine and Truck companies from throughout the city assisted in fighting the blaze.

Dead hydrants hampered the fight to contain the massive blaze. Flames and a column of smoke were visible for miles around the city and surrounding neighborhoods. Residents reported flames approx 75-100 feet in the air.

In all 5 homes were destroyed as well as a historic lumber yard where the fire is believed to have started.

The fire was brought under control in about 2 1/2 hours.

Nine people were left homeless after fire gutted their homes. The American Red Cross is helping those families find shelter this evening.

No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
