Daytona Beach Firefighters responded to 1055 West International Speedway Blvd. at about 7:30 a.m. the morning of August 3, 2010 for a residential structure fire.
Upon arrival of the first responding units, heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the southeast corner (rear bedroom) of the single-story, concrete block construction style home. Firefighters initiated an aggressive offensive attack to the fire and were able to confine it to the place of origin.
Firefighters conducted an interior search of the residence to ensure all occupants were out of the structure. Reports on scene stated that one of the roommates was asleep on the couch when he was awakened by the smell of smoke and discovered the rear bedroom was on fire. The other roommate was not home at the time of the fire.
During the investigation into the cause of the fire, firefighters discovered the fire had been started by improperly discarded smoking materials that set a mattress in the rear bedroom on fire. The roommate who was home at the time of the fire was treated and released on scene for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported. The occupants are staying with family and friends in the area.
