On February 27, 2005 Orange, New Jersey Fire Department located in Essex County transmitted the box for a fire at 464 Mountainview Avenue at 1210 hours. The Deputy Chief radioed heavy smoke from quarters and transmitted the working fire signal.
Upon arrival heavy smoke was showing top floor of a large two and a half story wood frame dwelling. All occupants exited the house.
Interior lines were stretched and Truck 1 laddered the roof to ventilate. West Orange Engine 1 was requested to the scene for the FAST Company.
Interior crews made their way to the third floor and starting knocking down the heavy fire. As they were advancing in, under high heat conditions, the third floor flashed over. The company was driven back down to the second floor.
Evacuation tones were sounded and exterior lines and Truck 1 ladder pipe were put to work. All the firefighters made it out of the top floor some with minor injuries. EMS treated a couple of firefighters and transported injured members with minor burns to be checked out at the hospital.
Mutual Aid was requested for East Orange Engine 4 to the scene. East Orange Engine 4 set up a deck gun on the B Side of the fire building. West Orange Engine was put to work with a 2 and a half inch line in the rear.
The fire was under control in 60 minutes.
