Crews from Mentor-on-the-Lake Fire Department under Fire Chief Bob Mahoney, were dispatched to a residential structure fire on May 4, at 3:57 p.m. with reports of two infants inside. A 16-year-old passerby stopped after noticing the fire and called 911. The passerby then assisted two dogs that were huddled outside the front door of the burning home that could not leave the yard because of an electric fence.
It was later discovered that the family of four was not home at the time of the blaze. One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.
Box alarm mutual aid companies from Kirtland, Mentor, Willoughby and Willoughby Hills were called to assist. The blaze which caused an estimated $145,000 damage to the two story home is still under investigation
