Around 5:15 AM on Saturday, August 21st, 2004 Chelsea MA 911 Center received a call for smoke in the area of Kayem foods, near Everett Ave.
The source of the smoke was a building fire at 18 Everett Ave, and Box 214 was struck. First due companies had heavy fire in the basement of a one story "taxpayer". The second and third alarms were struck. The fire extended from the basement, up to the first floor. The flames were very stubborn, and crews had a hard time putting them out.
Cellar pipes were brought in, and the fire was darkened down. However, it was still smoldering in the basement, and Hi-Expansion Foam was used to finally extinguish the fire. A Somerville Deputy Chief fell through the floor, but luckily he was not injured.
Special Note: This was the first run for the Boston Sparks Association Canteen Truck. The truck distributed bottled water, donuts, and hot coffee to the firefighters, and was greatly appreciated by the fire crews on scene.
