The Gettysburg Rural Fire Department was dispatched the area of Bridge and Factory Streets in Gettysburg, Ohio at 7:38 p.m. on Dec. 24 on a fire in a grain bin.
Assistant Chief Jeff Unger (782) acknowledged the call. He was advised by Darke County dispatch that the fire had spread to the building. He requested a full station response from Bradford Fire as well as Ladder 1 from Greenville City and three additional mutual aid tankers to supplement the municipal water supply.
He established command, reporting a three story grain elevator that was 50 percent involved. Because of the high winds and heavy wood construction, a defensive fire attack was ordered. Two more engines and tankers were dispatched to the scene.
Two 2 1/2-inch attack lines were established and several 1 3/4-inch lines were set down to protect exposures. A relay operation was set up to supply the ladder and fire attack engines used the Village of Gettysburg's hydrants. A fill site was set up approximately one mile from the scene.
While the elevator was destroyed, no one was injured and no other structures were damaged. During the scene, as much as 2,100 gpm were being flowed, and a sustained flow of 1,900 gpm during the first 60 minutes.
In all a total of nine stations with 80 personnel responded to the scene mutual aid. Three rescue squads for rehab operations, and two stations were called in as stand-by. Stations responding were Ansonia, Arcanum, Bradford, Covington, Greenville City, Greenville Township, Pitsburg, Pleasant Hill, and Versailles. Standing by were Pleasant Hill and Liberty Township. Rescue Squads providing rehab were Bradford, Gettysburg, and Greenville Township.
