Blaze Destroys Developmental Center in Maryland

Sept. 6, 2007
The Fire department conducted frequent fire drills with the occupants and staff.

On Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 4, Worcester County firefighters from Newark, Berlin, Ocean City, Showell, Snow Hill and Powellville (Wicomico County) responded to a fire at the Worcester County Developmental Center in Newark.

The fire, which is believed to have started in the attic, occurred during a staff meeting, and when none of the regular occupants were in attendance. As a result of frequent fire drills, the staff on hand was able to safely evacuate and account for everyone at the beginning of the blaze.

Initially, the fire was under control until companies began experiencing water supply problems. Crews were then able to quickly pull water from a nearby lagoon and water treatment plant to complete the extinguishment.

The center serves over 90 disabled clients and has been offered the use of the Newark Volunteer Fire Department station temporarily. The Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause.
