OXFORD, MD -- On July 10, the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a fuel spill in the Tred Avon River at the Pier Street Marina.
Oxford Chief Adam Mayock discovered diesel fuel. possibly from a sailboat, was present in the river.
He quickly directed his crew to place a boom to prevent it from spreading. The Talbot County Hazmat unit en route from Easton struck a deer on the Oxford Road, and was disabled. No personnel were hurt.
The crew of the Talbot County medic unit picked up several bags of booms, and continued to the marina to assist with the incident.
Oxford personnel launched their boat, and placed more than 250 feet of boom. They were assisted by Trappe and Easton firefighters,
U.S. Coast Guard officers also responded to the incident, and called for a helicopter in an attempt to find the source of the leak.
After booms were in place, the chief turned the incident over to the Coast Guard.
