On June 28, Wicomico County Central alerted Stations 3 (Fruitland) and 16 (Salisbury) for a motor vehicle collision with rescue at Route 13 and Stockyard Road. A few minutes earlier Somerset County, Station 5 (Princess Anne) was alerted by Somerset Central for the same incident, due to it being on the county border. Paramedic 502 with career Paramedic Dave Elliott (and Station 3 Volunteer Captain) arrived on the scene and reported a three vehicle collision involving an SUV, a dump truck and a log truck, with the SUV overturned and partially underneath the cab section of the log truck. To expedite the relay of additional information, Paramedic Elliott contacted Wicomico County Central on his cell phone and provided them with the same size-up. Paramedic Elliott then established the initial "Command" and began assessing the two pinned patients.
Salisbury 1st Assistant Chief David Black (16-16) arrived and after a face-to-face update, was given "Command" while Paramedic Elliott focused on patient care. Assistant Chief Black assigned Rescue Engine 302 the initial rescue operation, where they began vehicle stabilization. Rescue 16 and Paramedic 1 (Salisbury) arrived and assisted in the "Rescue" and "EMS" sectors. "Command" requested a medevac and Maryland State Police Trooper 2 (Andrews A.F.B.) responded (normally assigned Trooper 4, from Salisbury, was unavailable).
After a lengthy and complicated extrication, the two stable patients were removed. Considering the patient status and timing, the decision was made to transport by ground. Both patients were transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. The Maryland State Highway Administration was alerted to the call, and assisted Fruitland Fire Police with traffic control and scene safety. There were no reported personnel injuries. Companies remained on the scene for an additional hour to assist with vehicle removal and cleanup. The Maryland State Police responded and began an accident investigation.
During this incident, Wicomico County Central alerted Stations 1, 16 and 3 for a reported house fire in Station 1's first-due area. Station 15 (Allen) was special called on the alarm for staffing. The incident turned out to be a minor thermostat problem. Units were placed in service and Station 15 was reassigned to standby at Station 3.
