On Sept. 13, Hurricane Ike battered the Houston, Texas region, leaving behind 5.6 million cubic yards of tree waste.
Ever since then, out of state relief crews have been running trucks back and forth to landfills disposing of that debris. On Oct. 20 around 3:15 p.m., one of those trucks caught on fire in Pearland, on Sunset Meadows Drive.
Pearland Fire Department requested Friendswood Fire Department for mutual aid. They arrived first and pulled a crosslay for their initial attack.
Seeing that the hand line would not reach the main body of fire inside the truck, the deck gun on Engine 21 was put into service. After knocking down the fire, Friendswood ceased operations and allowed Pearland crews to take over.
The fire was mostly out in about 30 minutes and PFD returned to service at 16:36 hours. No injuries were reported.
