911 calls of a house explosion with fire, flooded into the Hopkins, Mn. Police and Fire Dispatch center shortly before noon on Monday May 10, 2004. First arriving Police officers found the resident of a small 1 story single family dwelling, standing in front of his home, severely burned. Hopkins Chief 2 (assuming command), FM/Chief 4 and duty Chief, Batt. 4, arrived and quickly called for mutual aid from neighboring Edina and St. Louis Park.
The large front window of the small home had been blown out into the front yard and dark smoke was showing. The resident was treated for his deep burns by police and HCMC paramedics and was transported to the hospital.
Hopkins Eng-1 and St. Louis Park E-1, arrived and spotted their apparatus to the front of the home. Two 1-3/4 hand lines were pulled from Hopkins E-1, as 2 crews of four made entry in the side door. Hopkins L-9 with Chief -2, spotted across the narrow street and began to ventilated the home. Chief -2 took Operations jointly with 'Park Chief-1( Luke Stemmer). Edina E-81 and five firefighters laid a 5" LDH supply nearly 6 hundred feet to supply E-1 and assumed RIT. Members of Hopkins E-2 arrived to support other crews operating at the scene.
The fire was located in the basement and was quickly brought under control. The primary search confirmed no other occupants.
Eden Prairie covered the vacant Hopkins station. The scene was being investigated as a suicide attempt by the lone occupant. FM/Chief -4 was doing this investigation with members of the HPD.
