In the early morning hours of May 4, a large fire started in a scrap metal recycle yard in Houston, Texas.
The first engine was dispatched at 2:51 a.m. on a trash fire. Quickly realizing the extent of the fire, Engine 23 requested a heavy box alarm for the incident. This brought District Chiefs 20 and 26, Engines 20, 42, 29 and 40, Ladders 20, 29 and Tower 18.
Due to the proximity of the Houston Ship Channel , District 20 requested the assistance of the fire boats, The Farnsworth and Bracewell. These two boats supplied water for the duration, eventually giving water to 3 ladder trucks and 1 tower for approx. 12 hours.
Crews were finally able to pick up mid-afternoon.
