Shortly after 10 a.m. on April 15 the Nash County NC, 911 dispatch received a call for dwelling on fire in the 3100 block of Womble Road in the Nashville section of Nash County. Stations 14 (Nashville), 12 (Red Oak), 17 (Momeyer) and 7 (Castalia) were dispatched.
Nashville Unit 14 was on the scene first and reported fire showing on sides C and D of a two-story log home. Nashville Engine 141 led off with an 1 3/4-inch attack line and made entry through the front door when they were driven out by the advancing fire.
A 2 1/2-inch line was placed in service at the front entrance way and firefighters began another aggressive interior attack, but were forced to retreat due to deteriorating conditions.
With the fire now consuming half of the dwelling and burning through the roof on the rear, firefighters transitioned to a defensive attack.
With no fire hydrants in the immediate area units setup drop tanks and tankers shuttled water approximately 1 1/2 miles away. A special call was made for Station 15's (Sharpsburg) aerial ladder.
It took firefighters over one hour before the fire was contained.
No one was home at the time of the fire but the family dog perished in the fire. The fire is under investigation by the Nashville Fire Department and the Nash County Fire Marshal's office.
Nash County EMS provided rehab support. The Red Cross arrived and supplied the firefighters with canteen refreshments.
