Jersey City firefighters responded on mutual aid to a three-alarm fire that ripped through two commercial buildings in Bayonne on March 25.
At 9:50 p.m., Bayonne fire dispatch was receiving calls for a fire at 13th Street and Broadway. Engine 2 encountered heavy fire in the two-story building occupied by a pizza shop and found a burn victim outside.
Ladder Tower 1 quickly setup for master stream operations and a second alarm was transmitted as fire extended into the Delta exposure, a large, three-story liquor wholesale warehouse. The fire in the original fire building was knocked down but the narrow space between building made it hard douse the fire that was running to the Delta exposure wall.
Tower Ladder 2 set up on the Delta side of the exposure building.
The three-story warehouse had no windows on the second and third floors making it hard to vent those floors, so trucks crews opened the roof. Soon fire was showing from the Delta exposure and a third alarm was transmitted bringing three pumpers, a ladder, a MSU/safety officer and a battalion chief the Jersey City Fire Department.
At the height of the fire three elevated streams kept the fire contained to roof area and brought fire under control in three hours. The roof of the liquor store collapsed which made it difficult to hit the fire.
The next day the building was torn down.
