The West Mount Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a possible machine fire at Regional Materials Recovery, Inc. on Community Drive, March 30, around 4:30 p.m.
Squad 4 arrived to find a yard filled with metal shavings from crushed cars burning and laid in from a hydrant for water supply.
West Mount Unit 4-09 declared a working fire as Squad 4's crew forced entry through a gate into the yard. Rocky Mount Engine 6 and Battalion 2 and the engine crew worked with Squad 4 to use a 2 1/2-inch pre-connect and a deluge gun.
Employees used heavy machinery to break the scrap piles apart and crews used two 1 3/4-inch hoselines to wet down the area.
The fire was marked under control after three hours and the last units last the scene eight hours later.
