Usually, these flying object travel out from the front or directly out from the rear of a vehicle; bumpers, hood or trunk hinges, plastic fuel tank failure, etc.
Our case study is provided by Mr. Steve Ely, who happens to be the Track Operations Manager for the Watkins Glen (NY) International race track and the Nazareth(PA) Speedway. The story is told in Steve's own words. Steve appears in one image, wearing a green jacket.
"Hi guys, Thought I would share an experience I had at a car fire the other day. 29 years this June in the fire service without an injury almost came to an end. I was leaving work and we were toned out to a car fire at the bottom of County Road 16 by the DOT barns. I got there and dumped two 5lb. Halons on it with no luck. I backed off and Montour Falls (NY) Fire Department's pumper came in first.
The pumper came past the fire and the guys grabbed the 1
