Texas Crews Rescue Utilities Worker Trapped in Trench

The man was unhooking a safety box and construction toll used to prevent the trench from collapsing, when it shifted and pinned him.

A 26-year-old man was rescued by the El Paso Fire Department after being pinned against a ditch wall at a construction site. The man, whose name was not released, is an El Paso Water Utilities worker who was part of a construction crew installing new pipes underneath an Artcraft overpass on Strahan Road.

The man was unhooking a safety box and construction toll used to prevent the trench from collapsing, when it shifted and pinned him.

The accident happened around 12:15 p.m.

The man suffered chest injuries and was taken out of the ditch using a crane and ropes. He has been taken to Las Palmas Medical Center.

Seven fire units and 22 firefighters responded to the call.
