Awning Collapse Traps Three in NC Gas Station

Jan. 20, 2022
Firefighters assisted three people to safety after an awning collapsed at the Valero gas station in Winston-Salem.

Winston-Salem firefighters were called to a Valero gas station after the building’s awning collapsed, trapping three people inside the store Wednesday.

People nearby said moments prior to the roof collapse, they saw the awning leaning over the front of the building before before it crashed to the ground.

“We had three subjects inside trapped, so we got rescue companies to assist with fired-up chainsaws and actually get that rubbish and debris out of the way,” Winston-Salem Captain Desmond Teal told WGHP MyFox8.

The two employees and a customer made it out of the building safely.
