Firefighters Rescue Driver after Pickup Ends Up in Springfield, VT, River

Firefighters from Springfield and Chester responded to a truck that plunged into the Black River and conducted a swift water rescue.

The driver of a truck that ended up in a Springfield river Saturday was rescued by firefighters from the fast-moving water.

Springfield firefighters threw a rope bag to the driver, who was able to climb onto the roof of the truck that was in the Black River as crews made a swift water rescue plan.

Chester firefighters responded on mutual aid with their rescue truck and fire/rescue boats to assist Springfield firefighters after a pickup truck left the road and drove into the river, the department shared in a statement

"CFD members entered the river and first assessed the stability of the vehicle before beginning the rescue," the department posted on Facebook. "Firefighters then safely escorted the victim to shore using a V-pattern formation to help split the river's current while shielding and protecting the patient during the crossing."

Firefighters got the driver to the shoreline and assessed him. He was uninjured.

"Our members train relentlessly for incidents just like this—whether they occur in our own community or while assisting our neighboring departments. We are proud to work alongside our mutual aid partners and are grateful for the continued support of our community," Chester Fire shared.
