Two firefighters were injured -- one with facial burns and the other with a knee injury --while fighting side-by-side blazes that officials believe were intentionally set on Detroit's east side today.
Both firefighters were transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital after the 8:55 a.m. fires at 2940 and 2934 Townsend, a pair of two-family homes just north off Charlevoix, near Mack and Van Dyke, Detroit Fire Lt. Dennis Walker said.
Walker said an updated condition on the injured firefighters was not available.
One of the two-flat buildings was engulfed from the first floor through the walls and into the attic when firefighters arrived, he said. A fire also was burning on the first floor of the other two-flat building next door.
"They both appeared to be set separately," Walker said, adding there was evidence an accelerant was used in both fires.
More than 30 firefighters spent about an hour extinguishing both blazes. Firefighters from Engines 9, 41, 32 and 23; ladder trucks 10 and 14, and squads 3 and 4 were at the scene, Walker said.
