Aug. 23--RENSSELAER -- A firefighter was injured Thursday night battling a two-alarm fire that ignited in a scrap metal yard near the Hudson River, the city's fire chief said.

A fire broke out at Rensselaer Iron and Steel at 35 Riverside Ave. at about 8:07 p.m., Thursday, city dispatchers said.

A "heavy volume of fire" greeted firefighters when they arrived at the yard, Chief Phil Foust said. The fire was burning in a large pile of metal debris that included automobile and other scrap metal. The fire was adjacent to a building, the chief said. City firefighters are familiar with responding to fires at the business, which recycles scrap metal, the chief said.

The city fire department was assisted by the Clinton Heights and Defreestville fire departments.

A Clinton Heights firefighter was injured while the fire was being extinguished. He was taken to Albany Memorial Hospital for treatment. The firefighter's name and the nature of his injuries were not immediately available.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to put out the fire, Foust said. He praised the firefighters for their efforts in bringing the fire under control.
