A Wood Buffalo firefighter was relieved from duty after learning that his teenage daughter was killed in a crash while evacuating from the Fort McMurray wildfire last week.
The crash happened last Wednesday when Emily Ryan, 15 and her cousin, Aaron Hodgson, drove away from Fort McMurrary in an SUV that collided with a tractor-trailer near Lac La Biche.
The collision sparked a fire that shut down Highway 811 for hours, according to CBC.
Emily's father, Wood Buffalo firefighter Cranley Ryan left the front lines of the devastating wildfire when he learned about the crash.
"Ultimately, it's still a shock, the grief comes in waves," sister Chelsi Ryan's told CBC. "It's tragedy, layered on tragedy."
"There's lots of grief to go around, but ultimately anything we lose is just stuff," Chelsi said. "We'd let it go a thousand times for Emily to be with us."
