WINDSOR — East Granby Fire Chief Peter Ahlstrin was killed in a one-vehicle crash on Route 20 late Thursday, according to officials.

Ahlstrin, 28, of Bonnieview Drive in East Granby, was heading east on Route 20 about 10:40 p.m. when his Ford truck went off the road near Hamilton Road, hitting the wire-rope guiderail, state police said.

The truck then rolled down an embankment and Ahlstrin was ejected from his seat and pinned under the vehicle,s state police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.

"With deepest sympathies, the East Granby Fire Department is saddened to report the untimely death of Peter Ahlstrin," the volunteer fire department posted on Facebook early Friday.

Other local volunteer departments took to social media to share their condolences.

"The members and families of the SWFD offer our Thoughts and Prayers to the Ahlstrin Family and the East Granby [Fire Department]. We are here for you. Deepest sympathies. God Bless," South Windsor Fire Department said on Facebook.

Simsbury, Suffield, Lisbon, East Hampton and Derby fire departments, among others, also posted that their thoughts and prayers are with the members of the East Granby Fire Department.

State police are investigating the accident. Anyone with information is being asked to contact Trooper Trevor Gregor at 860-534-1000.
