A firefighter at Indianapolis Fire Station 11 was injured when he tried to stop a man with a knife who was chasing a woman. The crew detained the man.

A firefighter was injured in a scuffle with a man outside an Indianapolis fire station before the man detained a woman while holding a knife in the apparatus bay.

The incident unfolded Saturday at Fire Station 11 when a firefighter, who was backing his vehicle into the fire station, saw a woman in "obvious distress" run into the station saying she was being chased by a man with a knife.

The firefighter jumped from the vehicle, stepped in front of the man and ordered him to stop. The man became aggressive and then shoved the firefighter against the vehicle, the fire department said in a statement.

Hearing the commotion, firefighters in the kitchen exited to the apparatus bay where they found the man had grabbed the woman in the apparatus bay with a knife visible. They called for the police department.

"Once the man saw the firefighters, he turned his attention to them and became both verbally and physically aggressive toward the crew. In fear of their own safety, firefighters used appropriate measures to disarm and restrain the man until IMPD arrived on scene," the department shared.

Police arrived and arrested the man and he was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The firefighter who was shoved into the vehicle was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.

The woman was not injured.
