EMMITSBURG, MD – Technology took center stage at the U.S. Fire Administrator’s Summit on Fire Prevention and Control here Tuesday.

To meet challenges like wildland urban interface, alternative energy sources and increased risks to firefighters’ health, U.S. Fire Administrator Paul Matheis said: “We are fortunate to have pioneering new technologies at our disposal, supported by a robust, dedicated network of practitioners, engineers and scientists who are fully committed to delivering modern, data-driven, science-based solutions to the problems we face.”

In addition to discussions about the impact of technology and science on responses, the attendees also heard some of the history of fire service.

While the United States is celebrating 250 years, the fire service is older as Ben Franklin helped create the Union Fire Company in Philadelphia in 1736.

Meridian, ID, Fire Chief Kris Blume reminded the nearly 140 attendees it’s “important to never let technology master us.”

He added that regardless of the technology, including drones and robotics, will never replace firefighters.

And, it’s imperative that firefighters have a seat at the table when officials are discussing land use decisions and deciding where to build as it’s the only way to protect personnel and the public, he noted.

Other issues he encouraged the group to address include recruitment and retention to insure there are personnel to continue to serve their communities and making sure behavioral health services are available and encouraged.
