Polygrass' Burn Shield Patent Receives CAL FIRE BML Class A Approval

Polyglass USA has become the first manufacturer to receive CAL FIRE BML approval for a complete low-slope, Class A fire-rated roofing system.

Polyglass USA reveals a significant advancement in fire safety as California deals with escalating wildfire seasons and stricter building regulations.

Polyglass is now the first manufacturer to obtain CAL FIRE Building Materials Listing (BML) approval for a complete low-slope, Class A fire-rated modified bitumen roofing system—a first for the industry—when combined with the company's recent patent for its Burn Shield Technology for steep slope underlayments. This accomplishment demonstrates Polyglass' expertise in providing high-performing, fire-resistant roofing solutions for homes and businesses.

Polyglass's exclusive, recently patented Burn Shield Technology is a key component of its fire defense line. This ground-breaking invention, which is designed to delay the spread of fire, gives building occupants and first responders vital extra time. This is particularly crucial in California's high-risk Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones.

Polystick XFR and Polyanchor XFR, two Class A, CAL FIRE BML-listed underlayments that satisfy or beyond California's WUI code requirements for steep-slope roofing, are powered by this technology.

“For communities living and working in wildfire-prone areas, every second counts,” said Jimmy Akins, VP of technical services, warranty and support at Polyglass. “Our innovative Burn Shield Technology isn’t just about compliance – it’s about safeguarding our customers, their families and their most prized possessions, when it matters most.”

Polystick XFR is a self-adhering waterproofing underlayment with Class A fire ratings that is perfect for high-temperature roof covering systems like copper, steel or aluminum panels.

Polyanchor XFR is a dual-purpose, Class A fire-rated, water-resistant, mechanically connected underlayment that satisfies the criteria of the California WUI code.

As evaluated under ASTM E108 and UL 790, the CAL FIRE Building Materials Listing attests that Polyglass roofing systems satisfy the state's strict fire performance requirements. This classification facilitates project approvals by local fire marshals and building inspectors and is essential for adherence to California Building Code Chapter 7A.

The first manufacturer to have a full Class A fire-rated low-slope system listed on the CAL FIRE Building Materials Listing is Polyglass. This accomplishment demonstrates the company's dedication to innovation, fire safety progress, and bolstering its standing in the sector. The Polyglass system's specifics include:

  • Deck: C-15/32 minimum
  • 2:12 Incline
  • Base Sheet: Elastobase V (mechanically affixed) or Elastoflex SA V FR/SA V Plus FR (self-adhered)
  • Optional Insulation: polyisocyanurate, perlite, or wood fiberboard
  • Elastoflex SA V Plus FR or SA V FR is the optional ply sheet. Elastoflex SA P FR or Polyflex SA P FR (self-adhered) is the membrane.

For wildfire-resilient design and post-disaster reconstruction operations, the goods in this BML-listing provide improved fire resistance, higher structure protection and long-term durability.

Property owners may be eligible for insurance discounts under California's "Safer from Wildfires" program if they install a Polyglass Class A fire-rated system. The California FAIR Plan, the state's last-resort insurance alternative for high-risk homeowners who have been turned down for coverage by conventional carriers, identifies home hardening measures that these systems also support.

With patented Burn Shield Technology for steep slope underlayments and CAL FIRE BML approval for a whole low-slope system, Polyglass offers tested, reliable fire protection that is prepared for the changing requirements of wildfire-prone areas for both residential and commercial roofs.
