Two workers removing copper from a Mesa building were seriously injured after apparently contacting energized material.

Two people who were removing copper from a Mesa building while firefighters conducted training were seriously injured.

Firefighters were taking part in training Tuesday when a work crew was removing copper from the structure at Avery Street and Tahoe Avenue.

The workers—who were not firefighters—came in contact with copper “that apparently was still energized," a Mesa Fire and Medical Department official told AZFamily.com.

Both of the people were taken to the hospital, where one is listed in critical condition.

No firefighters were injured in the incident.
