A firefighter was injured by falling bricks while escaping the burning apartment building during a three-alarm fire in the city's Roxbury neighborhood.

A battered Boston firefighter's helmet was recovered from the wreckage of a roof collapse during a three-alarm fire Monday and shows the damage caused by the flames and falling debris.

"This is what was recovered in the rumble from the 3 alarm fire on Edgewood St," the Boston Fire Department stated in an online update about the call. "The helmet was lost when firefighters had to quickly evacuate the building under intense flames and deteriorating conditions before the roof collapsed."

As crews worked to keep the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings, they were ordered to exit the building as the roof was collapsing. One firefighter was taken to the hospital after being struck by falling bricks while getting out of the building.

“Heavy wind up on the top floor, with the heavy fire it just whips up the fire and makes it a blast furnace,” Boston Fire Commissioner John Dempsey told WBZ-TV on Monday. “We couldn’t get enough water on it quick enough.”
