A man died after fleeing from police after he pulled a gun on San Diego firefighters inside a smoke filled apartment.

A man who pointed a gun at San Diego firefighters in a smoke filled apartment died after fleeing from police Saturday.

Firefighters found smoke in the hallway and inside a first floor unit at the Tierrasanta apartments around 12 p.m. after a neighbor reported smoke and no one answering the door.

Inside, a man put a handgun over his shoulder and pointed at firefighters, forcing the crew to retreat, 10News.com reported.

The crew called for the San Diego Police to respond and they established a perimeter.

About 1 p.m., the man appeared outside and began shooting at three police officers who returned fire.

"There’s a patio attached to his apartment, and he jumped off of that patio and started running east through the parking lot, at that time we had officers at the perimeter, they heard a single gunshot and ABLE was flying overhead and they did see the man lying on the ground, and it appeared he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head," said Lt. Amber Baggs, Media Relations Director for the San Diego Sheriff's Department said.

No law enforcement officers or firefighters were injured.
