A flash fire inside a Los Angeles County inmate firefighter personnel carrier left six members burned Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Golden State Highway as the crew of 10 were returning from a training event near Castaic.
Chad Sourbeer, a battalion chief with the Los Angeles COunty Fire Department, told KTLA that the fire was “spontaneous,” adding that it was “a little odd.”
One firefighter suffered serious burns and was transported to a burn center as a precaution. The other inmates sustained a variety of injuries including mild burns and were hospitalized.
Fire officials told the television station they were going to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the fire and injuries.
The inmates are from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation program.
