A woman was killed in a large, overnight fire at an apartment building in East Orange, officials said Friday morning.

In addition, five firefighters were taken to an area hospital to be treated for minor injuries, city spokeswoman Connie Jackson said.

Eighteen families were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross of New Jersey, officials said.

The identify of the woman who died in the blaze was not immediately available, authorities said.

The fire broke out at The Villa on the corner of Prospect Street and Park Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Firefighters from East Orange and neighboring municipalities worked for hours to bring the blaze under control.

Video from WABC-7 showed heavy fire and smoke pouring from the roof of a four-story building.

Firefighters from departments in Montclair, Bloomfield, Nutley and South Essex (combined South Orange and Maplewood) assisted.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
