Watch: Man Shot, Killed by Cops at Hagerstown, MD, Fire Scene
A man Hagerstown firefighters encountered during their search at an apartment fire was later shot and killed by police.
Firefighters immediately left the Randolph Avenue rowhouse and called for police assistance. No emergency personnel were injured in the Friday evening incident.
Residents gathered in the street and on the sidewalk watching as police, some carrying protective shields, converged on the scene, videos showed.
When the man, who has not been identified, ran out of the house toward officers and refused commands, he was shot.
EMS personnel who were already at the scene transported him to Meritus Medical Center where he was prounced dead.
Two knives were recovered from the scene, but it has not been determined if he was carrying them when he was shot, according to a statement from the Maryland Attorney General's Office.
The AG's Independent Investigations Division is conducting a probe of the incident as required by state law.
"The officers were equipped with body-worn cameras. The IID will generally release body-worn camera video within 20 business days of an incident. There may be situations where more than 20 business days is necessary, including if investigators need more time to complete witness interviews, if there are technical delays caused by the need to shield the identities of civilian witnesses, or to allow family members to view the video before it is released to the public," officials wrote in a statement.
