Artists Invited to Create Installation for New NM Fire Station

Sept. 13, 2020
The theme of the public art project for Las Cruces Fire Department's new Station No. 3 should be inspired by the services of the firehouse, firefighting or the station number, according to the city.

LAS CRUCES, NMLas Cruces Public Art is looking for an artist or a team of artists to create a project to be installed on three sides of the tower on the new Fire Station No. 3 building.

The public art project will be funded by the city of Las Cruces and will be a collaboration between the city's Public Works Department and the Las Cruces Public Art Program coordinator. Applications are open for nationwide participants.

"This is a national call, but we want to give our local artists a good chance to apply," Rebecca Courtney, city art board member, stated in an email.

The project specifications say the art can be three-dimensional, that it might wrap around the three sides of the tower, feature different elements and motifs and that it can "stand off" from the structure but it has to be attached to the tower.

The theme of the project should be inspired by the services of the fire station, firefighting or the station number.

The project has a budget of $40,000 to cover fees and expenses for the project. The deadline for applications is Oct. 4.

Artists can find more information and the application at the website of CaFÉ, an art submission portal, at this website.

Fire Station No. 3 is at 390 N. Valley Drive. Voters approved a GO bond initiative in 2018 which included money to build the station.
