Shots struck a West Rogers Park firehouse where a person who may have been fleeing a gunman sought refuge Sunday morning, authorities said.
The shots were fired around 6:30 a.m. and shattered a window and hit the overhead door of the firehouse at 6239 N. California Ave., home to Battalion 9 and Engine 71, according to Fire Chief Juan Hernandez. It happened around the time a person sought refuge at the firehouse and was allowed inside, the chief said.
Chicago police were trying to confirm a report of a person who later went to a hospital with a possible graze wound, according to Officer Michael Carroll, a police spokesman.
Shots also struck other buildings in the normally quiet stretch of apartment buildings, strip malls and other small businesses, officials said.
The fire chief said he was concerned at the brazenness and recklessness of the person pulling the trigger.
“It’s very disturbing. Whoever did this didn’t care about life, whether it was firefighters or civilians or anyone else,” Hernandez said.
No arrests had been made.
